I have a few dream computer setups:

First: I want to have a detective/stem punk looking office.  Complete with orange yellow lighting, and an old tv set gutted with a flat screen inside and a desktop for basic computing.  I already turned an old metal typewritter into a usb wireless keyboard, which I think will look boss.  I want to design a brass trackpad with a globe for the actual ball.

Second: Work computer.  Not much to be said, jut whatever dual socket desktop board I can find that can support as much ram as I can find and an nividia quadro (or two).  My current work computer started as an 08 macpro and I ca't wait to see what the difference two i6s and ddr3would make over 2 xeon and ddr2 ram.

Third: Render farm (preferably 5-10 comps, with as many cores as possible).  I saw a very cool design.  Someone made a render farm out of a filing cabinet and made little led indicators for temp, and working, ect (tried to find it, but this was similar http://hackaday.com/2008/10/04/another-ikea-linux-cluster/).  Even with a beefy desktop I don't want to wait for it to render all of my projects.  Not to mention animations takes bloody forever to get real quality.

Dream computers?  I build them all the time...

I actually suggest that individuals go to Alienware.com and customize the most wicked PC that they would like to have.  I then go to either TigerDirect or Newegg, order the parts, and build the PC at a fraction of the cost.

My latest build was for my step-son, and at Alienware.com the PC that he went crazy customizing would have cost $6,400...  It was a bit out of his price range, so we ordered all the parts at TigerDirect and I built it.  He did not have a case that had an Alien on it, but the internal components is what really counted.  Oh, the final price of the $6,400 PC ended up costing $1,700, a small fraction of the original price.  I also saved him some money by reusing some components like the hard drive, CD/DVD/Blueray drive, the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.  The rest of the components were new, and the same specifications as the Alienware components.

I built my first dream PC for myself back in 2003, and I never regretted doing so.  My PC would have cost me $2,200 at Alienware.com back then, but I only purchased the internal components that I needed and built it for $788.  I only replaced the motherboard, CPU, ram, power supply, and video cards, and I was satisfied with the results.

Build your own, customize what you have, just be yourself.

Computers do not have problems, they have users
