Learn to be Aussie
« on: April 24, 2011, 10:14:12 AM »
I was talking to some mates on Zombie Bomb about this so I am now here making a thread.

First of All, The No.1 most annoying thing is how foreigners think we speak. WE DO NOT TALK LIKE CROCODILE DUNDEE. Only a few people around the outback (bushland around the center/centre of Australia) still speak like that.

Let's start off with a few words/sayings that we say, and some older generation (baby boomers +) australians say.

G'day - Hello ; Good day
Mate - Friend, close friends you hang out with
Bro (typical adolescent/pubescent saying) - Used in sayings such as, "sup bro"
"Fair Dinkum" (a world used by many older folk) - the truth or genuine
"Tucker" (older or bushland saying) - lunch, dinner or meal
Good onya - good for you or well done
bludger - a lazy person or a person avoiding something (most usually, school)
Yewy - u-turn in traffic ("chuck a yewy at the next traffic lights")
Rock up - to turn up, to arrive - "we rocked up at their house at 8pm"
Pom, pommy - an English person; I'm pretty sure this is derived from "Prisoners Of his/her Majesty"
Arvo - afternoon (wanna come down to my place this arvo 'round 3?)
Bloody Hell (also used in other countries, but prominently AUS) - For F*ck's Sake!
Thingymajig(thing-ee-ma-jig) - Used when you can't remember something. (What's his name? uhh-Thingymajig...?)
and my favourite: "Macca's"  (pron. "mackers")  - the way almost all australians (not newly migrated) abbreviate Mcdonalds.

Also, aussies tend to combine these words with swear words when angry.
eg. FKing hell, ya fking pom! Mate your a fking d*ckhead alright. (hope this is alright, I tried to make it age appropriate)

Ask me if you don't understand what a certain word means. If you just so happen to come to Australia, use these worlds (and pronounce them correctly) to fit in, or not look like asian tourists (I'm part asian so it's not racist :P).
Many Americans think we speak like complete, un-educated fools - but its just slang. Believe me, some Aussies think all americans speak like, "HOWDY Y'ALL!" and what not.

Hope ya learned a little bit on how to speak like an australian. If it works well for you, good onya mate!

There are also people in australia, generally Sydney, that are called "wogs". They are people from maltese, lebanese and similar decent. They speak a little of there own version. Search up, "superwog" on youtube for an idea of them - and check out the video, "how to deal with police". To save you time, heres the video :)

Australians are so interesting. I think I may start a thread like this about Canadians. Too bad there are only two Canadians in the clan...

The Aussie accent is funny-ish.

For some reason they like to pronounce a couple of words incorrectly or over pronounce it (whatever that is) such as,
NOOOOOOOOOi mite.
Alroit - alright
Noiceeeeeeee - Nice

That may be some Aussies though.

I love this thread, cause now people no about us OZZIES yewwww.
But even in different states I think the people talk a tiny bit different. Like I lived in south Australia for 7 years and then moved to NSW( near sydney ) and my friends say I talk a bit different like maybe it isn't as strong as theres.

Yes, aussies do tend to pronounce things incorrectly. something like "alright" could be said like UHHHH-IGHT lol.
And as rondonboy said, people from different parts of australia speak differently. NO ONE from the city speaks like crocodile dundee like people out near the center of Australia do. Its just how we roll dawgg..? - Last quote shows I watch too many american movies :D

It depends what part of Australia you live, some states might have more nationalities than one therefore, adapting to how they speak and mixing accents.
