Riddle me This. URT Proplem

So, I have an older laptop I used to play urt on.  I believe I played on URT while this laptop had win7 on it, it could be when it was xp.  I am trying to get it up and running but I have run into an error of sorts.  After start up my screen is gray.  I can hear the music and sfx when I move my mouse and commands work (although vid_restart yielded the same result). 

I am at a loss.  I have gone through the following steps:

Reinstall urt.
Try URT in safe mode.
Roll back graphics drivers.
Download new graphics drivers.
Double check that opengl is supported.
Disable Fullscreen
Ran under xp compatibility
ran as admin
Tried various combinations of the compatibility settings

Nothing showed any signs of improvement.  The odd thing is that the gray screen is in a 4:3 aspect ratio.  When in full screen mode it has black bars on the right and left and windowed it is 4:3.  So what have I forgotten?

If you are going to re-install URT, use ccleaner before you reinstall, and clean up the registry.  Just uninstalling or removing does not clean up the residual files left behind.  Settings and what not could still be lurking somewhere in the registry.

When I was at Short Shorts house, his computer had the same issue.
Solution:
Get second computer to follow first computer's player, and act as eyes.

Or get back to Linux, Turban. At the very least, dual-boot for UrT, and leave your windows for those...

Great now I am covered in massage oil.

My bet is something is screwy with the opengl on the win7 graphics drivers for my (****TY) on-board intel graphics "card".  Although I could have sworn I had it running in the on this very same machine on this os... well I might try a dual boot, or just continue to game on my desktop.
