My computer has a virus or something...... :(
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:08:41 PM »
So here's the deal, I think my computer has a virus or something. Basically what is happening is that when I turn on my computer, which is a hp Pavilion dv7, its shows the hp logo and starts to run but then I just get a black screen and a blinking white underscore in the left hand corner of the screen. I'm using Windows 7. I've tried various things to no avail and have researched my problem by looking on the web. By doing so I believe that it might have something to do with the boot logger. For some reason my computer cant find the application that its supposed to boot. So I'm thinking that I might need a Windows 7 recovery disk in order to be able to fix my computer. I could then go into my BIOS setup and have it run the disk first. But i cant find a good download link anywhere on the web for a free one. Also, the only reason I'm able to even post this is because I'm using HP QuickWeb by having it as my starting application.

If anyone can help me solve this problem or provide insight I would be very thankful.

Try turning it off and changing the slot your RAM is in. If you have 2 sticks of RAM remove one and try the other in both slots. If it still doesn't work, try the other stick in both slots. If all that doesn't work then it's probably a Win 7 problem.

Make sure you UNPLUG the computer and hold down the power button for 10-20 seconds before you touch your RAM sticks. Do that every time. If not you can really mess up your motherboard and/or the RAM.

I used to get that all the time when I screwed the mater boot record. Search for win7 mbr fix and see if it helps.

I don't know if my computer runs on 64 bit or 32 bit so I tried to download both files. I wasn't able to download the 32 bit on but I was able to get the 64 bit one and i burned it to a CD. But its not working when i try to load it in the BIOS setup.  I have changed it so it will go to the CD first but it is just not reading the disk or something. Do i have to reformat or unzip that file you posted or anything? I just don't know what to do.

It's an ISO image. If you see the file you downloaded ON the cd you burned you did it wrong.

According to this page your system is running the 64bit version of Windows7so the 64bit iso will work but make sure you burn it using the correct tools like quake mentioned or you will end up with a coaster.

Ok, so now i've downloaded the 64 bit repair disk, burned it to a CD, correctly this time, and ive been able to run it on my computer and followed the instruction on that website you showed Tesla. But it doesn't seem to be working. I'll try to fiddle with it some more and see if I cant figure it out. Maybe I'm just not doing it correctly.

For some reason my computer cant find the application that its supposed to boot

Do you see any error messages when you try to boot your system that tell you that "BOOTMGR is missing" or does it show the blinking caret only and no error messages at all ?

The reason I ask is because you will need to tackle the problem in different ways depending on what is shown on the screen at the time the boot process fails.

If you see an error message saying something like "BOOTMGR is missing" then read the guides listed here

If all you see is a blinking cursor and no error message you can try the guides listed here AND here

None of those messages show up its just a black screen with the blinking caret. I'm pretty sure that this is the result of a virus though. So i'm now looking online for like a rescue CD or something that will let me get rid of the virus.

So, certain problems do come back to bite you in the ass from time to time.

But as for this time, I was prepared.

My thanks again Tesla.
