Operating Systems
« on: July 24, 2010, 01:15:52 PM »
What operating system do you use? Which operating systems have you used? Why do you use your current operating system over others?

Primary OS: Win7 x64
Secondary OS: Ubuntu 10.04 (will probably be replaced soon)
Tertiary OS: Ubuntu 9.04 (will probably be replaced soon)

OSes used:
Win: 95, 98, ME, NT, Vista. Note: I have dabbled with XP but not extensively.

My primary OS is used for Urban Terror, Ventrilo (though Mangler is pretty darn sweet), general web surfing, IM, and music.I choose it because last I heard, you need iTunes to sync your iPod Touch because it runs a modified version of OS X (iOS). One of the things that makes me not able to go back to Vista is the way the taskbar is. No longer need for a quick launch,  and the pinning is really intuitive. It's really hard for me to go back to a system without it. Not that I hated Vista--I liked vista just fine.

My secondary OS hasn't really been used much. It runs the xmonad DE and occasionally GNOME. I use xmonad because it really /does/ save a lot of time when you're programming. Also, it helps if you are learning from a website and don't need pictures, to just boot up Elinks. I use GNOME because my experience with KDE has generally been bad.

My tertiary OS is just kind of there. I haven't touched it, really, since before I left for school last year. I am currently using it right now to attempt to create a mirror of two manga websites.

Future? I am going to try to install Arch Linux as my secondary OS on my main computer (my laptop dual boots Ubuntu and Windows and is currently my most powerful system).

I won't be able to participate in this thread, there are two many OS's that I've either used or written. The database that our site uses would not be able to handle the amount of data I would have to contribute. Lol. But trying Arch is a good thing, you are moving in the right direction there.

I'm running Mac OSX 10.5.8. What others have I used? Lesser versions of Mac OSX. Why do I use it? No other choice. xD

Right now, Fedora 13.

Others that I have used: Far to many to list.

I love the *nix, been using and playing with it for an obscene amout of years. And I do everything with it, from college things to banking. Though right now I do not have the space for it if I can get to building another box it will have windows on it.

Ahahaha it seems my praise of Arch is working on you Lurker!  ;)

I used XP up until about 4 years ago and switched to Ubuntu (iirc it 7.04 at the time) when I got fed up with Windows taking an age to do anything. I broke several mice in a rage >:D Dual booted for a while until I got rid of my iPod (this was back when iPods were useless with Linux) Got bored of Ubuntu after a year or two when it wouldn't let me remove junk I thought was unnecessary, and started dabbling in the dark arts of Arch on a second harddrive. Then built my first computer, whacked Arch on it and haven't looked back. Mangler seems nice so far, only had it installed a few days.
Most of the large stuff is custom-compiled for minimal size and dependencies, just cos I can  :P
Urban Terror takes up 736.63MB out of my 1735.64MB system. So the whole lot, browser, media player, image editor, vent etc is <1GB  :D And I've had it sub-700MB whilst still being usable, but required more effort to maintain. Means I could in theory burn it to a CD and take it with me...  :P

Running windows 3.1. RECOGNIZE! MS DOS shell up in this B**CH!

Kidding, running windows 7 x64. My first legal operating system. Have used all Windows systems and used Ubuntu for about a day. Also used to use Whatever OS Mac's had while I was fooling with Hypercard in school.

Who cares. Looked like a sideways brick, played like a regularways brick. The only good experience I ever had with a Mac was playing "Theme Park" literally all night long at my buddy's place.  Slept pretty well the next night.

PS LOVE the F**K out of my iPod Touch!

I am running, Win 7 Pro on a few computers in my house. I am also running Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6 (most have win 7 on them as well) My gaming machine has XP Pro, Win 7 Pro and used to have slackware but I got rid of it april because I didnt want to put the time in compiling everything myself so I switch to zenwalk (slackware distro) which I really do love using. Thats about it at this point.

I have 3 servers and about 10 desktop computers, but I'm currently only using one.  I've been running Windows XP Pro on my main system for about 5 years now.  Why?  Because when tweaked, its extremely stable (restart once every few months), and its less of a PITA than Linux.  Granted, Linux is better, but I'm not too experienced with it yet, so I keep using XP.

Previous OSs used: Windows 3.1, Windows ME, Windows XP Home, Ubuntu (can't remember what version), Fedora 6, Cent OS, and Mac OS 10.3.9.

Mate, this is a discussion thread not a help thread.

True that, but if I may...
Your HD size, monitor, sound card and mouse are of little consequence lol.
You have sucky integrated graphics, a quick Google search will show that your machine isn't up to the job. Best bet is to turn down all the fancy settings.
We now resume your regular thread...

I guess I could count Android too, running Froyo 2.2 on my Nexus One, just waiting a few years before UrT runs on mobiles  :D
